Well, it’s decided and arranged! I’ll be heading to Alaska on Tuesday July 10th for a 2-month contract waiting tables (ack, am I still capable of doing that kind of hard work after over 10 stationary years in office settings?!?!) at the restaurant of Summit Lake Lodge, located 80 miles south of Anchorage on the Kenai Penninsula, a forested area enroute to highly-touristed coastal towns such as Homer and Seward. After my work is over, I’ll take a few more weeks to explore the area on my own and with friends who have already declared a fall vacation to travel with me up there! I also have a cousin in Wasilla, just north of Anchorage, who I will visit for the first time and whom I haven’t seen in many years now. I have a one-way ticket and will just see how things go once I get there and figure things out! I can’t wait to see the fjiords and glaciers and mountains and bears…oh dear.
Everyone I’ve told has been incredibly excited for me and enthusiastic and encouraging of this crazy 30-something adventure! I’ll keep you posted…thanks for reading!

That’s great ELR-Bean! I’m glad it all came together. Travelling sounds great and I hope you will give me the heads up when your path comes through the PNW. I’ve always wanted to visit Alaska so perhaps now is the time. Any suggestions as to how to plan an itinerary from Anchorage to you and beyond? Have a great adventure. What did you end up doing with your condo BTW? Miss ya, crazy gal. Shan

Hi Elena:
You Go Girl! Do all you can while you’re young. Steve and I have been to Alaska on one of those 12-day Princess Cruise trips in 1995….to Fairbanks, Denali, Anchorage, and all the little towns the cruise ships go….hiked all day in Ketchikan while there, very pretty. I am interested in hearing about your adventures. Maybe there will be a piano around for you to crank out some of those great tunes!

When your cousin in Wasilla told me you should round up some jingle bells for your trip, I assumed it was a joke about the early onset of winter in Alaska…but it turned out that she was serious…you need to attach jingle bells to your belt so that they ring as you hike along through the woods and alert the bears that you are in their vicinity. That way either they can leave, or you can, on the run! Ha ha.

Hey Elena, off to the “Last Frontier” eh? You’re going to love AK. Bunches of stuff to see & do. Hopefully the job won’t keep you from exploring the beauty that abounds. Spent a week in Seward in ‘04, traveled extensively, and took a ton of pictures. Stopped in Moose Pass several times. The lodge & setting by the lake are pretty neat. I took photos of the lodge doors – clever how they used animal horns for the door pulls. They have float planes coming and going from there. Topography is rugged and its a long way between anything. Most everyone you meet working in Alaska (even very remote places), are not from Alaska. Good luck and happy trails – it wil be an unforgetable experience. Remember not to get too bogged down with the waitressing thing. Fred Garcia

Hi Cutie!
You sound very excited about working and touring Alaska. I signed up for your blog and look forward to hearing about your adventures.
When I was a junior in college I went on a summer canoe trip(2 canoes and 4 people) from Grand Rapids Michigan, up the Hayes River (lots of portages and rapids), up to the the Hudson Bay, 12 miles out in the Bay to get around the mud flats, 90 miles up (againest the current) the Red River, and then with 1 can of freeze dried food left hailed down the train with a dish cloth which luckily stopped for us. The mailman sorting the mail adopted us and we sold him our canoe.
We stayed for a week each on two Indian reservations. We had mesh head gear the was kept off our face with round circles and discovered that the red cross uses misquitoes for blood donation.
We were taking the same route as the French Traders who brought goods into Winepeg. I later saw a TV program that showed that same trip.
It was a grand adventure and I hope that you have one too.
Love and hugs,
Your Aunt Roberta

El,
Great!
Sounds like a lot of fun.
Can’t help but encounter some serious adventures.
Enjoyed the photos and comments from Lugano.
What ’s with Alaska these days? I was recently (since seeing you in SD) asked to apply for a job in Ankorage where I would have most likely been the best qualified applicant, and therefore expected to get the position.
After some serious deliberations with Robbie over a few days, we decided what we really wanted to do was stick with Plan A (retire in Dec 2008), and head out on our own adventures. If we had accepted the position in AK, we would have felt obligated to give them at least 2 or more years.
But it sure was tempting! And now we have a better idea of what it is like up there.
This is my first day in front of a computer in about 2 weeks, so see you are on your way today already.
ENJOY!

Very Exciting Elena! What a great adventure you have planned (and certainly some unplanned as well!). A ranger in Glaicer/Waterton Park once told me (while I was wearing bells) that the way you can tell Grizzly scat from black bear scat is the Grizzly scat has bells in it! Cannot wait to hear all about your travels and new friends! xoxo Manon

I have a friend in Bellingham who climbed Denali alone CRAZY he is but a great guy, botanist, etc. so write me if you’re passing through that way and need a contact or some advice about what to do in alaska…the final frontier? It’s amazing how quickly one’s life can change when you’re ready for it…happy travels.

Elena,
I can see from this blog that you have a lot of friends. And I’m sure you’ll make a lot more up there among the glaciers.
When you see a bear, you should think of me. Did you know that “Bear” is my “maiden name”? Funny, huh?

I have to say, Elena, the scenery just around the lodge is absolutely stunning…snowcapped mountains, lakes and forests…you have it all! I hope you can locate some good hiking trails soon so you don’t have to plow thru dense undergrowth just to take a walk. Keep those photos coming! (I enjoyed seeing your red-haired friend…is her twin identical?)

Hi Elena! I just got on my e-mail as I am here in Rochester. I was in Buenos Aires until this past week and had a great time there.
I’ll be here until July 30. My friend Anne from Sweden and her boyfriend are coming this week to Rochester for four days so I’ll be showing them around.
I am so excited that you are in Alaska! I talked with Julia a few days ago and she told me. Now I’ve seen your blog and I think this should be a great adventure!! Enjoy!

Elena,
While googling for your blog, I came across a police report regarding a minor crash in September. Michael and I breathed a sigh of relief at the note of NO INJURY. Read: http://www.dps.state.ak.us/pio/dispatch/Trooper%20Dispatches%20of%2009-18-2007.20070918.txt.
We love you! Are you experiencing Most Amazing Things?! You are an inspiration.
